How to Prepare Furniture for Storage

How to Prepare Furniture for Storage

Storing furniture might sound simple but if you want it to come out looking just as good as the day it went in, preparation is key.

Whether you’re renovating, downsizing, or storing furniture between moves, taking the time to pack and protect your items properly can save you from cracks, mold, or warping later on.

Why Proper Furniture Prep Matters

Furniture is built to last, but it’s not built for neglect. Temperature changes, moisture, and dust can all damage unprotected pieces over time especially in Perth’s warm climate.

By cleaning, covering, and positioning your items carefully, you can:

  • Prevent mould, mildew, and odours
  • Avoid scratches and dents during moving
  • Maximise space inside your container
  • Keep your furniture ready to use anytime you need it

Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to prepare furniture for storage like a pro.

Step 1: Clean Everything Thoroughly

Before you even think about packing, give each item a good clean.

  • Wooden furniture: Wipe with a soft cloth and gentle wood cleaner or a mix of vinegar and water. Let it dry completely.
  • Upholstery: Vacuum and, if possible, steam-clean fabrics to remove dust, hair, and odours.
  • Leather: Wipe with a damp cloth and apply a leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
  • Metal parts: Use a bit of WD-40 or oil to prevent rust.

Tip: Moisture is your enemy. Always make sure every piece is completely dry before wrapping.

Step 2: Disassemble Large Items Where Possible

Take apart anything that can be safely disassembled such as beds, tables, shelves, and even modular lounges.

  • Keep screws, bolts, and small parts in labelled ziplock bags.
  • Tape the bag to the underside or inside of the furniture piece.
  • Wrap disassembled parts in blankets or bubble wrap to prevent rubbing.

This not only prevents damage, but it also makes loading your container easier and helps you fit more in.

Step 3: Protect and Wrap Each Item Properly

Use breathable materials to cover your furniture to avoid trapping moisture.

  • Mattresses & sofas: Use plastic covers or specialised furniture bags.
  • Wooden pieces: Cover with blankets, sheets, or padded moving blankets.
  • Glass tops or mirrors: Wrap in bubble wrap and secure with corner protectors.
  • Drawers & doors: Use masking tape or twine to keep them from swinging open.

Avoid using thick plastic wrap directly on wood or leather since it can trap condensation and cause warping or mould.

Step 4: Plan Your Container Layout

How you load your storage container makes a big difference.

  • Start with heavy items first. Place sofas, tables, and wardrobes at the back or along the sides.
  • Stack vertically. Use the container’s full height (especially in a 20ft High Cube).
  • Use soft items as buffers. Blankets, cushions, and bedding can protect fragile pieces and fill empty spaces.
  • Leave small gaps for airflow. It helps prevent condensation buildup over time.
  • Keep access in mind. Leave a small path in the centre if you might need to grab something later.

Step 5: Choose the Right Storage Option

U-Move offers flexible container sizes and two convenient storage setups

  • Off-Site Storage -Store your container at U-Move’s secure, 24/7 monitored facility in Cockburn. Ideal for long-term protection and total peace of mind.

Step 6: Don’t Forget Insurance

Even with the best preparation, accidents can happen. Check if your home or contents insurance covers items in storage.
